as the days get darker so shall the music, so on that note we welcome back the fold moscows own polymorphic with the ever turbulent rock on ep. this time out polymorphic delivers the goods with 3 new tracks, rock on, scream & move faster. the ep also features a remix of the title track by marseille who also had a hand it turning out proxys raven last year. this ep is not for the feight at heart. both mixes of rock on tear things up with a decidely old school electro undercurrent while keeping things noisy and agressive on the top end. and there s only one thing we can really say about the last two tracks because they are that scary... scream will make you move faster.

all the way from new zealand to the urban landscapes of berlin, simon beeston is a man who likes diversity. this is not just evident in his choice of residence, but also in his musical output. following an ep on highgrade digital and a track on our various artists vol. vi record, simon now presents dusty back room, his first solo 12inch release on highgrade. the ep opens with the title track dusty back room, a track of strings and stabs, and a sound not exactly typical of previous highgrade releases. but when the music comes with such compelling energy and provocative atmosphere, were prepared to make an exception. new zealand meets berlin as we cast an eye over green landscapes and ocean swells, while the bumpy groove intoxicicates us with its magic spell. that simon beeston is a man of great contrast is clearly evident on the b-side with neon cringe and cymbolic. the percussive heat of the club brings us back from the organic landscape of his homeland and into the neon lights of the night. neon cringe resonates with a healthy dose of acid pump, while cymbolic provides a bass driven journey complete with cut up vocals and blistering cymbal rolls. this is a release that richly deserves its round number: highgrade number 70. especially with the addition of the bonus digital track tough luck, another highlight all of its own.

cyber dance records unleash their fifth record entitled somewhere out on the nightside. the ep consists of four tracks introducing a new batch of artists to the cyber dance cartel, brassica, serious lover, bill ambrose and melanie houston. brassica is the music of hackney bedroom producer michael anthony wright. hes had a couple of records on dissident and has a few more lined up for some other quite well-known labels over the next year. ballo dei morti was conceived one dark christmas day in milan and features the chorus of slayers dead skin mask vocoded in italian. the track has been eagerly awaited on vinyl after several months of attention through blogs such as 20 jazz funk greats and vice magazines music blog. serious lover is the brain-child of london based producer sam ryan who fuses electro-soul influences of early jam and lewis production with a more modern, harder sound, employing vintage synths and archaic drum machines in the studio and electronic musicians for the full live show. bill ambrose has been producing music on his collection of vintage synths and drum machines for over a decade, working behind the scenes as a producer or engineer on several releases. he wrote paranoid specifically for cyber dance earlier this year. melanie houston is a dj, musician and producer from london with a passion for dark, emotional music and a previous history in berlin where she djd and contributed music for the cult techno label tresor. with influences incorporating everything from avant-garde electronics to 80s synth pop, melanies as renowned for her skills on the turntables in the mix as for her abilities in the studio.

badmotorfinger got lost amid the blockbuster success of nevermind and ten (all were released around the same time). but the fact is that, though they re all great records, badmotorfinger is much less accessible by comparison. not that it isnt melodic, but it also sounds twisted and gnarled, full of dissonant riffing, impossible time signatures, howling textural solos, and weird, droning tonalities. its surprisingly cerebral and arty music for a band courting mainstream metal audiences, but it attacks with scientific precision. part of that is due to the presence of new bassist ben shepherd, who gives the band its thickest rhythmic foundation yet and, moreover, immediately shoulders the departed hiro yamamotos share of songwriting duties. but its apparent that the whole band has greatly expanded the scope of its ambitions. and badmotorfinger fulfills them, pulling all the different threads of the bands sound together into a mature, confident, well written record. this is heavy, challenging hard rock full of intellectual sensibility and complex band interplay.

mike minds only previous release, >acid machine<, has been tigas most played record since it was made. a full-time turbo employee, he has spent the past few years getting his brain around making techno, and continues to impress us with his output. his debut ep, >resonate<, is something of a departure for our label, and one we are very proud of.
its amazing to have this kind of music coming directly out of turbo hq, it nails a sound that we have always tried to cultivate. minimal without being boring, trippy without being predictable, unafraid of melody, and with just enough analog imperfection and warmth to it.

bodo elsel has only done a handful of records and the two that i have known and loved since 1998 were put out on playhouse, the excellent housey sister-label of mighty klang elektronik. one track in particular, discount baby, has always stood out in my mind as a high water mark in the sacred art of groove (you may have heard of it). punchy accents and resonant bass layered with trippy vocal loops, its dubby acid house of the highest order, made by a mysterious german lego-master, who the a&r team of mike mind and thomas st shindig managed to coax back into activity.
it only took bodo a year to answer mr. minds email, but he eventually delivered three amazing tracks... >haustier< revitalizes piano house. >mai< is incredible, and >mein haus< is one of the top few all-time expressions of the greatness/meaning of germany, putting it in the fine company of the autobahn, sven väth and christmas-market schwein. nice wibes!!
the icing on the cake was that bodo made it very clear he wanted no part in royalties or any of that business crap... he just wanted 42 copies of the record. yes. 42.

finally a full ep by d marc cantu (1/2 of 2am/fm and under other aliases involved in collabos with traxx). technically its the follow up to his cult hit no control (creme jak 02, today a highly sought after 12inch) and in good h-h-h-house fashion this ep contains a ball busting jtc remix of this anthem. but the centre piece must be the title track one of the most emo-simplo jak trax weve ever heard here at the office. starting out simple enough with a single finger synth line (like the musings of a retarded secretary), it mutates into a big wailing distorted saxophone (or a mating whale, who knows?), this puppy will fill your room and throw everybody into an instant k-hole. hey, if that dont sound appealing check the soundclips for proof, its pure liberation... nay rebirth! more floor destroying crazyness on the flipside, but were all out of steam describing it. jak jak jak

things open up with >naked<. the kink mix in full effect. it sounds like a soundtrack to an alien invasion for the first half before the squelchy and slightly wonky synths rotate the oscillators to full effect.
>this time< keeps the drums four miles deep but adds on slabs of discordant waveforms. >goody gumdrops< drops in smatterings of portamento blasted arppegiator lines and negative question is all about the handclaps and pulsating bass. a fine rough guide ... and debut for anyone to be proud of.

lets have fun! - thats the mantra of big zis and the crew of nation music. the swiss black music label has been broadening its musical spectrum over the past years. just like the artist big zis, whose music could most likely be labeled electro pop alternative punk rap, they dont care about common conventions.while rap becomes more and more pimped out, house loopier and minimal narrow-minded, big zis hooks up with a top-class troupe to get it her own way.for her most recent album und jetz … (and now …) she worked with marton di katz and valentino tomasi (both members of kalabreses famous rumpelorchester), who laid the musical foundations for most of the songs. for the impulsive electro on the track suure räge (acid rain) however, big zis collaborated with the techno producer michal ho (tuningspork) at the studio. suure räge got remixed by several well-known producers: robag wruhme (freude am tanzen) and canson (gs zürich) are to be found on volume 1 and the soul brothers lexx (aka kawabata / drumpoet) and kalabrese (stattmusik) successfully combat boredom on volume 2. the sound scapes of the remixes couldnt be any more diverse and cover a broad variety of styles. and be sure: volume 3 - work in progress - will delight you as well!

the title of max coopers stochastisch serie ep, refers to his use of stochastic methods, also known as non-deterministic, or random methods of sound generation. stochastic elements referring here mainly to real sounds including vocal experiments and sampled sounds which create a complexity and richness which has been a trademark of many well known traum releases in the past. the london based artist max cooper sees his new 12 inch as a construction of different moods going beyond club music, as witnessed in the past through tracks such as i and end of reason. it is no surprise that dischordance is another one of these timeless pearls alongside these mentioned tracks that have created a fan base worldwide for him. the friction max generates is created by two sides colliding, the synthesised drums and melodies and the random experiments with voice. his dance floor rockers stochastisch serie and mnemonic work in a much more functional way but do include bits of this randomness and therefore are part of the superstructure stochastisch serie. the remix of uk producer leeks is very hip in style and sound and will please a lot of younger djs who love the cool swing and groovyness with music and will find the functionlism here going very strong.

the phenomenal handclap band, are a many-membered ensemble which also features musicians from tv on the radio, jon spencer blues explosion and amy winehouses backing band the dap kings, all of whom contribute their individual talents to make for a very exciting whole. their sound is an anthemic, dancefloor-oriented blend of progressive rock, disco, electro, and 60s soul with sprinklings of hip hop-styled orchestral breakbeats and moody, synth-soaked & heavy hooks. using live instrumentation to evoke the intricate arrangements of norman whitfield, quincy jones and phil spector as well as the pared down beats of contemporaries like the neptunes and danger mouse.

>the cockpit< is my personal favourite song of the chelonis album and it has taken my sleepless night (and days) to watch out for the right remixers. now that all new versions are ready, i m more than happy because all three fellows have felt the real vibe of the original song. a spezial thanx to ekkohaus who delivered two different mixes and spent a lot of energy and passion into these productions. and also merci to steve rachmad and paul woolford, guys who stand rather for techno, however improved their soul into creating passionated tech house! chapeau! without much need for introduction, archipel welcomes the talent of minus niederflur who bring with them the darkly blinding >lumen ep<. a lumen is a unit used to measure the perceived power of light and this ep is most definitely very powerful and certainly can be perceived as such. this is where the line between something as intangible as light is crossed and becomes tangible as one would feel an intense and warming heat which goes so far as to manifest itself as something with mass. title track >lumen< is the focused, convex lens, knife edge point of light which focuses a small portion of the suns energy so densely it could initiate many a blaze. >masse< is as dense as the most solid of gems and radiates dark light like heavy water and is sure to corrupt any geiger counter within its radioactive reach while >flor< stacks itself as high and wide as it can go, building further and further upon itself, and just as one would think it could build no further, it rotates itself back to within and further densifies, an inescapable sort of density of which one is eternally locked pleasurably within. >flucht< raises one into the blackest skies of night and flies hour after hour through blood orange clouds filled with the atmospherically scattered light from what was temporarily civilization below but is now just a memory shaded in the delight of being closed within the phosphorescence of late night fog.

yore returns with yet another deep master piece. javier alvarez, a madrid based producer and proprietor (along with his younger brother dubbyman) of the underground label deep explorer music, brings his relaxed above smoke sound to the yore imprint. in the first of four warm and atmospheric mood pieces, awfully drapes dense synthetic winds over a deliciously grooving, bass prodded deep house pulse. get down does exactly that with five funky minutes of rhodes chords, disco hi hats, and synth swirls, a percolating bass line lends the track a propulsive charge, while crowd voices give the cut a party vibe. on the b sideÆs ôthe fixö javier scatters chopped fragments of the spoken line, i ve got a lot of shit to say and i cant say it all in one day, i cant say it all on one piece of tape, over a funk house groove, after which dubbyman offers variations on the theme in his remix of the track, dubbymans version digs deeper into the cuts bass science and warms the tunes slinky pulse with hand percussion and claps. old school in its embrace of classic house sounds, above smokes ep is tailor made for those who like their material laid back, groove centered, and funky.
